Winner African Investor Award 2006AfriCap overcome strong International competition to win Africa investor Award for Venture Capital Deal of the Year.

In 2006, AfriCap won the 2006 Africa investor award for Venture Capital deal of the year.  The award recognizes the successful investment in and partial exit from Equity Bank Ltd in Kenya.

The Africa investor Awards were established in 2004 to promote and reward companies investing in Africa. The 2006 ceremony took place on November 9, 2006 at the beautiful Safari Park Hotel in Nairobi, Kenya.

Equity has been praised by the World Bank as a model institution for the impact of its micro-finance products on poverty reduction and for its success in reaching the unbanked. It has also been praised by the United Nations for improving the ‘level of service so significantly that all other financial institutions were forced to follow suit.’

The Awards ceremony in Nairobi was attended by over 250 senior executives from across Africa and the rest of the world. Dignitaries present included Mr. Charles Soludo, Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Mr. Brian Molefe, CEO of the South African Public Investment Corporation as well as top-level delegations from NEPAD, the World Bank, UNDP, The Coca-Cola Company, Old Mutual, East African Development Bank, Celtel, Barclays, Standard Bank and Safaricom.

Judges for the awards included Dr Bamanga Tukur, Executive President Africa Business Roundtable and Chairman, NEPAD Business Group, Dr Ken Kwaku, Ms Arunmah Oteh, Treasurer, African Development Bank Group, Amir Dossal, Executive Director, United nations Fund for International Partnerships, Dr William Kalema, Chairman of the board of the Uganda Investment Authority and Mr Joe Wanjui, Chancellor of the University of Nairobi.
