Fund Concept

AfriCap is a 10 years investment company, the largest of its kind investing solely in microfinance across Africa. Having initially been sponsored by developmental organizations, AfriCap has so far succeeded in making 14 investments across 12 countries. These investments have produced 2 exits, with an average IRR in excess of 30%, and one IPO. The fund began with the objective of being a demonstration model for private finance in the microfinance sector and has been successful in achieving this aim whilst having a positive social impact. Following recapitalization, AfriCap is now focused on portfolio growth and the further development of its individual portfolio companies.

Undoubtedly, one of the biggest challenges facing our society is poverty. Despite numerous technological and medical advances, much of the world's population still lives on less than $2 a day. Microfinance is an essential part of poverty alleviation and economic development and could significantly and positively alter the lives of many ordinary Africans. Although the industry has made great strides on the continent (growing on average 30% per annum), there's still a long way to go.

Only commercially viable institutions will be able to develop on the scale required to meet market needs and it is this concept that launched AfriCap. It is clear that equity investment is a vital catalyst for the growth of the industry and competition, factors that will ultimately benefit the consumer and improve the continent's future. Having developed a strong portfolio, AfriCap will now leverage our critical experience in Africa to further develop this portfolio and be a force for change.
